September 6, 2005 - Grocery, clothing, personal hygiene products, toys and lots of bottled water.
These are just a few of the items St. Landry Parish now has available free for people affected by Hurricane Katrina at its newly-created shop at the old Wal-Mart location next to Stage.
"As long as there is an evacuee in our parish, we're going to help them," said Parish President Don Menard. "We have some of the most compassionate people in St. Landry Parish. It's sad that something like this had to happen, but after this, we're all going to be better people. We have to take care of one another."
Individuals in need can go to the old Wal-Mart shopping center to fill out an evacuation relief form and show identification, which will verify that the individual is from a parish that was hit by Katrina.
About the center
The St. Landry Parish Evacuee Relief Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week offering Hurricane Katrina evacuees an array of goods including clothing, groceries and general toiletries for free.
Evacuees must present identification to shop.
The center is located in the old Wal-Mart store on the I-49 South Service Road next to Stage. The shopping center is just south of the Creswell Lane exit.
