PARISH KEEPS EYE ON RITA
With shelters full, new evacuees told to go north

September 16, 2005 - St. Landry Parish, already awash in evacuees from Hurricane Katrina, is on alert again as Hurricane Rita churns its way into the Gulf.

"We are staying put for now and watching the storm's track," said Lisa Vidrine, executive director of the St. Landry Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. "We are still uncertain where Rita is going to go."

For now, she urged residents to keep informed about the storm's progress.

"We are asking everyone to make the necessary precautions," Vidrine said.

While the parish is not expected to be hit directly by the storm, the big problem will be what to do about any new surge of evacuees.
